Three Things to Re-Use in Your Home Right Now
I haven’t done a craft blog in some time now, and I am sitting here looking around my house for inspiration. As I rack through the things I love to do and narrow it down for you, and the idea came to me. I love crafts, and I love to reuse things so write a blog about both! So here are three super easy ideas for things in your home that you can reuse right now, and that not only help keep things out of landfills but are super handy too!
One- Make Shopping Bags out of your cat/dog food bags, Chicken Feed Bags, really anything that comes in a sturdy sack. My preferred method is sewing these so I know that they’ll be stronger, but for lighter uses you can even just staple or glue them together. How to do it:
Cut the top strip off of the bag so it has a nice clean opening.
Cut about 1/3 off the top of the bag. This will become the handles.
Fold the top of the remaining bag down on the inside, just enough to create a seam, and secure by sewing/staple/glue.
Take the strip you cut from the top (Should still be in it’s ring form) and cut that in half to create two rings.
Cut the rings, just once, and viola you have your handles. For cleaner edges or stronger handles you can double them over and secure.
Then simply attach to the inside of the bag, and there you have it! Reusable bags.
** this does NOT work with the food bags that are paper inside, only the full plastic ones.
Two- Tshirt rugs.
Love these, they always turn out really funky and they’re super durable. They’re even machine washable!
Simply cut your old tshirts into strips about an inch wide.
Knot together the strips and cleanly trim ends, and wind your new rope into a ball to work with!
From there, there are many methods. My favorite is to knit with really fat knitting needles or even finger knit just like you would yarn! Make to your desired size and finish off! BAM! Unique rug. Can also be crocheted or even sew together “rag rug” style. Stop wasting money on rugs and you know you have some old tshirts laying around that you need to get rid of. We all do.
Three-Shoe Rack Window Garden.
If you don’t already have one of those wooden shoe racks you can find them endlessly in thrift stores for $5 or less. These make EXCELLENT vertical gardens the fit PERFECTLY into window sills! From here, let your imagination go as wild as the plants you are putting on it- you can get creative by putting saucer and plates on the rack and setting your pots on those, or even just keep it super simple- solo cups fit perfectly between the dowels and you can have your own little herb oasis right in your kitchen! Right now is a great time! Your local dollar store has all kinds of herbs for less than a dollar a pack. Go nuts! They will become more dormant in winter, but keep up with them! They’ll be big and beautiful again in the spring and you will have fresh herbs to cook with, fresh flowers in the home, or even just a cool spot for your current plant babies. Plus, being vertical means you have more space for more plants! Always a win!
So there you have it. Three very simple crafts to reuse items in your home. Not only will this save money and keep the earth a little more clean, you will have the satisfaction that you made it or grew it and that’s a great boost for your mood and wellness! Enjoy!
